Project Homemade Christmas: Peppermint Foot Soak...

I have been busy with Christmas this week...having lots of fun creating homemade gifts!
I have a number of projects that I want to share with you in the coming weeks.
I have an important rule though.
I want to share with you projects that only take about an hour of your time...because we are all busy people, right?
I like projects that are completely do-able in a reasonable amount of time....so an hour is my rule of thumb.
The first project I tackled this week...
*Peppermint Foot Soak*
This is a great gift for friends, teachers, book club members and any girl on your Christmas list!
For this project you will need:
Small jars...recycled, canning jars or from the dollar store.
I got these for $1 at the Dollarama.
Epsom salts and peppermint oil.
I picked up this bag of epsom salts at Superstore for $4.29.
Peppermint oil can be found at any health food or natural foods store.
I found peppermint oil in the drug section of my local grocery store for $13.99.
Pour the epsom salts into a bowl and add 8-10 drops of peppermint oil to the salts and mix up with  a spoon.
Now scoop the peppermint foot soak into the small, clean jars,
Embellish with ribbon and a mini candy cane if you like.
This gift would also be great paired with soft, fluffy socks.
I picked up a cute red pair from Dollarama.
Now, how did I make those labels, you ask?
Here's a tip...Avery Labels has a great site where you can go and design and print your labels online.
I love this site and I have used it several times for address labels, organizational labels and food labels.
I picked up a package of the new oval labels from Staples for around $13.00.
I know that I will use these labels often, so the cost was worth it to me.
Then I went online to the Avery 'Design & Print Online' tab, put in the number of this product and made the labels.
I then printed the labels from my computer, peeled them off the sheet and put them on the jars.
Easy!
If you have never done this before, it may take you a little time to figure it out, but having this skill is so useful!
You could also make labels with scrapbook supplies.
Whatever works for you!

Using the size jars and the bag of epsom salts I used made 8 jars of peppermint foot soak.
You could use smaller jars to make more gifts if you like!

Organizing For Christmas 101...

Here in Canada, we celebrated Thanksgiving in October, and with Halloween come & gone, and Remembrance Day observed on November 11, we can now focus on getting ready for Christmas.
Last November, I wrote this post on how I am a formerly 'late to the Christmas party' person.
I used to leave things to the last minute and chronically under-estimate the time it would take to do things....so therefore, I was not enjoying Christmas at all. I found I was tired and stressed out.
I began to think that perhaps there was a better way to 'do' Christmas.
And there is.
And the SECRET is this:
*Start early.*
 *Give yourself deadlines.*
*Do only the things you enjoy. Let the rest go.*

Part of starting early is to use the month of November to do the 'work' of Christmas.
November is about for preparing for Christmas.
December is for enjoying Christmas.

I am going to share with you my list for November and the things that I like to do because they give me joy!

1. Christmas Cards-Deadline- December 1st.
I love, love, love sending & receiving Christmas cards. It's one of my favourite things about Christmas.
Our Christmas cards include the annual Christmas photo of the kids and a brief Christmas letter to share our news as I still have many older family members who do not have computers.
I want to have my Christmas cards in the mail on December 1.
2. Christmas Baking-Starting November 19th.
I love putting on Christmas music and making myself busy in the kitchen whipping up treats to share with loved ones. Baking relaxes me and I like making old favourites along with trying out a few new things.
This is a cookie platter that I made up last year to share with friends.
I gave out 5 of these platters.
Next week will be 'CHRISTMAS COOKIE' week here at Echoes of Laughter. I can't wait to share some treats with you and I also have a blogging friend joining in with me on the fun!
I am starting Christmas baking this week...beginning with the treats that freeze well.
3. December Daily Album for 2011-Deadline December 1st.
I started doing this 2 years ago and I love this project. It's involves making a mini-scrapbook with a page for each day of December to record all the little things that make up the season.
I plan to have my mini album ready for December 1 so that I can just add a picture and little writing for each day.
4. Christmas Decorating-Deadline-Last 2 Weeks of November.
I love creating fresh tablescapes for the season. I plan to have the holiday decorating done by the end of this week...everything but the tree.
We will decorate the tree as a family the first week of December. We love to listen to Christmas carols while decorating the tree and then we have appetizers and watch 'Elf". It's one of our fav Christmas traditions.
5. Shopping Complete-Deadline-December 1st.
I do not enjoy Christmas shopping in December with heavy traffic, full parking lots and long line-ups.
I know some people enjoy shopping in December because it puts them in the Christmas mood.
But I would rather be home baking!
My personal deadline to have my shopping completed and wrapped is December 1st.
For the last few years, I have had a 'shopping date' with a friend where we go shopping  on a weekday while the kids are in school and we start early, shop, have lunch, and finish up.
For me, it's a huge sigh of relief to have this done early!
By having the work done in November, December brings lots of time to spend with my family....cuddling up in warm flannel jammies, sipping hot choc, playing games and watching movies.

How about you? Will you join me in using November to get some things done?
What do you plan to tackle first?

Edited to Add: I have had some fantastic comments that this post is really helping people tackle Christmas in a more organized approach. My blogging friend Meg at 'Nutmeg & Company' made this list after reading my post.

Isn't it fabulous?

Little Athletes, Big Leaders...

Imagine never having played  a particular sport until age 20.
And then working hard and mastering skills so that over the course of the next decade and a half, you've progressed enough to play in the professional league of your sport AND win a couple of Grey Cup championships, along with being named a league all-star player...not once, but 3 times?
It really is an incredible story.
***
This is the story of  my fellow Acadia University graduate Bruce Beaton.
Bruce and I both started Acadia University in 1986, and over the course of my studies there, or rather, my social life there, I had the pleasure of meeting Bruce as a young football player.
He joined the Acadia Axemen Football team....having never played the sport before...but the coach saw potential in him and gave him  a chance.
We used to call him the "Gentle Giant" because although he was 6"5" and around 300 pounds, he was kind and thoughtful and had a very gentle manner about him.
He was well liked and respected by everyone who knew him.
Although Bruce and I left Acadia at different times, me to a full-time job and family,  and he to pursue his football career....I always followed his career through the media and marveled at what he had accomplished in his football career.
Bruce is now retired from the pros, and lives in my home community in Nova Scotia with his wife, Michele and 2 young children.
He is a very dedicated husband and father....he cherishes his wife & children above all else.
And he has recently written a book called,"Little Athletes, Big Leaders".
I had the privilege of receiving a signed copy from Bruce and I am so excited to be able to share my thoughts about his book here at Echoes of Laughter.
In this book,  Bruce has tackled the topic of effective sport parenting....giving advice and well thought out strategies and suggestions on how we, as parents of children in organized sport, can support, encourage and nourish our children as they participate in sport.
His message is child-centered....he explains in very clear ways how parents can create a family culture that supports the child as they grow in their sport.
Once I started reading this book...I found it hard to put down.
It has so much great information and so many inspirational quotes.
Little Athletes, Big Leaders is not only an incredible book on sport parenting, but an amazing book on the subject of well-rounded parenting as well.
I think that many of the strategies & methods that Bruce suggests would be useful in supporting your child in any endeavour...not just in sport.
It is full of advice that every parent should bring to the 'game' of parenting EVERY.SINGLE. DAY.
He has gathered solid evidence from the fields of sports psychology, science, sociology, and business management on how to create a positive environment for your child to thrive in while learning to work at and give effort to the task at hand.
I love how he suggests that parents focus on the approach to the game and NOT the results of the game.
And he stresses how the approach to the game is everything... the effort, daily work, the fun and the camaraderie of teammates...those are the lessons that our children take away and apply to their everyday life for years to come.
This book does an amazing job of empowering parents to make informed decisions about how to direct and support their child in a positive and loving manner that will yield a lifetime of happy results.
I think this is a book that every parent should have on their book shelf to read and refer to often as they guide their young children along in sport.

As parents, my husband and I have been very lucky in the fact that both of our children have been very passionate about their chosen sport at a young age.
Our daughter, Hunter, was 4 years old when she came to me and expressed her desire to 'learn to skate and twirl in a dress'. We enrolled her in CanSkate's Learn-to-Skate program and she has been skating ever since. She's now 15 years old.
{To read more about my daughter's passion for skating, click here.}
She has progressed through the figure skating testing stream- passing over 20 different skating tests to finally reach the 'gold level'. It has been a personal goal of hers for a number of years now to pass her gold level tests.... one of the highest levels a skater can attain.
She also participated in the sport of synchronized skating for 6 years...skating on 11 different teams at various levels.
She was fortunate enough to have had the experience of skating at the  Canadian Synchronized Skating Nationals...twice.
And let me qualify here by saying I have no background in the world of skating whatsoever.
None. Zilcho. I can't even skate.
But I have spent hundreds of hours at arenas over the last 10 years supporting my daughter in her love of skating.
For the 2010-2011 season, my daughter was on ice 10+ hours per week...not including off-ice practice, while maintaining honours at school and tutoring 4 elementary children weekly in french reading.
{I marvel at the time management skills she has learned at this young age!}
I  have attended and watched every practice and every competition she has skated in, except for the last season when she, as a 14 yr. old, wanted more independence from Mom.
For years, I was the Mom who drove other girls to practice. I seldom went to practice with less than 2 skaters in my car. Many, many times I had 4 skaters in my car...driving to practice at 6-something in the morning in the coldest of weather.
And I always stood by the rink boards to watch my daughter skate.
To me, she was so beautiful to watch.
The only advice I ever gave to Hunter was to work hard, try her best and have fun. That's all I  ever asked of her.
However, I have been in the dressing room and rink side when I have heard other parents make disparaging remarks about other skaters. And I have heard parents make critical comments to their children which always took my breath away and made me feel crushed for that child.

I wish I could give a copy of this book to every parent out there who has a child in organized sport.
It takes a village, right?
In my opinion, Bruce has given the village an amazing message to share!

Thank You Style At Home Magazine!!

About a week and a half ago, I was thrilled to be contacted by the web editor of Style At Home Magazine, Elaine Song, asking if I would like to contribute to an upcoming web article on Halloween Tricks & Treats.  One of my submissions appeared on their website last Thursday.
I was so, so happy about this little feather in my cap!

I want to let everyone know that my blogging schedule for October got sidetracked for other commitments. My parents visited for about 10 days at Thanksgiving and I wanted to spend EVERY. POSSIBLE. MINUTE. with them.
And also,I have been training for a new part time job that allows to me to set my own hours AND work from home.
However, the training for this new job was two weeks of full-time hours followed by another two weeks of nesting time.
So that, my friends, is where I have been.
When I am not working...I am spending my time with my family....taking the kids to their activities, making meals, keeping up with laundry, etc.
Family always come first!
But I am excited to let you know that I have been working on a
PROJECT CHRISTMAS
series which will be all about organizing and sharing ideas for Christmas.
Some of you may remember that I shared 16 projects for Christmas last year which included crafts, baking, etc.
I am hoping to do the same this year....to inspire and share with all of you.
And I will be back to visiting your beautiful blogs and seeing what you have been up to very shortly!
Fingers crossed!!

Banana Chocolate Chip Muffins

This recipe is for my dear cousin Stephenie.
She visited a few weeks ago and I sent her home with a batch of these muffins.
She has asked for the recipe and I am happy to share it.
They are our family's favourite muffins....I have been making this recipe for almost 20 years.
It's an easy recipe to make...you can mix it up with a bowl and spoon in 10 mintues!
That's it!
And they are the yummiest muffins...so moist and good..you can eat them for dessert!
Great for a lunch box. Or breakfast.
Or 2 am in the morning.
{But no one here does that}
Banana Chocolate Chip Muffins
{makes 12 muffins}

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

In large bowl:
Mash 1 cup of ripe bananas.
Add 3/4 cup white sugar and
1 cup Hellman's Mayo. {Use only Hellman's mayo..it substitutes for the eggs and oil in this recipe. Do NOT use Miracle Whip, or your muffins will taste like a super weird sandwich. Been there. Done that.}

Mix these 3 ingredients until smooth.

In small bowl, mix together well:
1 cup all purpose flour
1 cup whole wheat flour
2 teaspoons baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt

Add flour mixture to banana mixtuer. Stir untiol just moistened. Add 1 cup of your fav chocolate chips. Scoop batter into muffin tin. Bake for approx. 20 minutes.

If you want these muffins to look more 'gourmet', add dried banana chips, large oatmeal flakes and choc chip as a topping. I've done this before to give these muffins as a gift!

Enjoy!
{Love you Steph! Come back and visit again soon!}

Inexpensive Artwork For A Little Boy's Bedroom...

When I was home visiting in Nova Scotia this past summer, I had the pleasure of helping my cousin & his wife put together a look for a bedroom that was going to become Big Brother's room when Little Brother arrives this fall.
We chatted about a  look for the room, and I suggested that the room could fresh & fun without being too 'themey' or 'disneyed out'... a room that could grow with 'Big Brother'  for the next few years.
We started off with a visit to Homesense to search for new bedding for a twin bed and some inspiration for a colour pallette for the room.
Mom fell in love with a beautiful cotton bedding set that was made up of various shades of blue.
Then we chose some fun accents pieces in frog green to give the room some great little boy energy.
{I really wish I had taken pictures of the bedding and accents...but it was such a busy few days!}
One thing we couldn't find for the room was some artwork.
I suggested we look at children's books to see if we could find something suitable to frame.
After some time browsing through children's books, we found one that we liked.
A counting book {$7.95} with cute animals...perfect for a little boy.
I loved the counting theme and the simple, black typeface with sweet pictures.
We visited a local dollar store and picked up some inexpensive frames.
And because the pictures from the book were a little small, I added some scrapbook paper in blue & greens to make borders to fill in the frame & compliment the artwork.
It didn't take long for the finished project to look like this:
 Silly seals and funny frogs.
The grouping of 6 framed pictures came in under $30. A fantastic deal!
I was so happy with how this project came out.
I only wished that I could have been in Nova Scotia longer to help with painting the room and getting
it all ready for the dear little "Big Brother".

Happy Thanksgiving!

This weekend is Thanksgiving if you live in Canada.
At my house, we are getting prepared for our Thanksgiving dinner tomorrow.
We like a very tradional dinner.
On the menu besides turkey and gravy are:
Mashed potatoes
Carrots
Green Beans
Roasted Squash
Roasted Brussel Sprouts
Rolls & Butter
Homemade Cranberry Sauce
Coleslaw
Pickles

Ginger Ale
White Wine

And for dessert, we are having, at my son's request, Black Forest Cake,
 and Pumpkin Pie
and these yummy looking gingerbread bars, which I found here.
I just read on facebook where one of my girlfriends just said "Happy Thanksgiving" and then added
"Break out the fat pants!"
So true!

Wishing you all a wonderful weekend...whether it be worn with fat pants or not!
