A Family Favourite: An Oatmeal Breakfast Bar

I thought I would share one of our favourite breakfasts on cold winter mornings~

An oatmeal breakfast bar.

I started doing this a few years ago for my kids to 'up' the fun factor for breakfast.

The kids and I really like oatmeal....it's just fun to have different topping to change it up a bit.

It's a super easy project that takes little time.

You just  need a few jars, a pen and some labels.

Label the jars of oatmeal toppings.

Below are some of our favourite oatmeal toppings.

I try to keep it healthy~craisins, dried fruit, nuts & seeds & brown sugar.

But you could have any toppings you like!

Serve on a tray at the breakfast table.

You just need to add a pot of hot oatmeal and a small creamer of milk.

The kids love that they can add toppings to their oatmeal.

I love that they are eating something warm & healthy for their tummies.

We think it's a wonderful way to start the day.

freshening up a little for spring...

While doing some cleaning for Spring, I have been changing up my 'tablescapes' a little.

It's so fun to do this every once in awhile.

This is a collection of little bottles on top of the martini bar.

I collected them from Goodwill. I paid 99 cents each.

I love a cheap thrill, what can I say?

Something a little fresh for the dining table.

Wish I could say they are real.

But Homesense has wonderful little pieces like this.

The little table by the front door.

I just 'shopped' the house for these things.

A pile of vintage books that belonged to my Grandmother.

A mini lamp my Mom purchased for my kitchen years ago.

An artichoke tealight from Anthro.

A white pitcher from Homesense with some flowers.

I find making the top of the piano look interesting my biggest challenge.

For now, just another arrangement of books.

simple beauty....

I came home from my 3 day scrapbook retreat to find this arrangement on the coffee table. The hockey team that Ron coached this winter had a gathering on Friday night, and a bouquet of flowers was given to Ron for me. To my surprise, Hunter had opened up the bouquet, cut the stems and arranged them in this clear vase.

I found out that she had spent Saturday with a skating friend and her mom, and among other things, they had a lesson in arranging flowers from a visiting Aunt who used to be a florist. Hunter designed this arrangement, brought it home and placed it on the dining table...it's simple beauty took my breath away. I love the simple shape of the gerbera daisy in the centre.

The last surpise was waiting for me at my desk. This small arrangement is so pretty and fragrant.

Fresh flowers are wonderful.....especially when your twelve year old daughter has designed them just for you.

in the spirit...

One of my favorite things about Christmas is the Christmas feast. I love the smell of turkey in the air and the anticipation of the meal. Mom being with us and making all of our favorites. The kitchen was a flurry of flour and egg shells everywhere, but we had so much fun. We made trifle for dessert with homemade custard and real whipped cream. Eggnog garnished with freshly shaved nutmeg. Homemade stuffing and cranberry sauce. Mom made the centrepiece for the table and Hunter helped set the table with my Grandmother Ada's dishes. It was so wonderful having Mom & Dad here to break bread with us. The fun of opening the Christmas crackers. The silly paper hats. The little strips of paper with jokes inside. Laughing about the HUGE bowl of trifle Ron took for his dessert. Dad sticking to his pumpkin pie for dessert. This is what Christmas is all about. The spirit of being together and enjoying each other's presence. I am so thankful that my children have experienced the spirit of Christmas in spending time together as a family. Three generations together under one roof. Playing, eating, going for walks, telling jokes, watching movies and baking together. Makes me so happy.
